Filament control

How to manage filament inventory for 3D printing.

Knowing how many grams are left, what each restock cost and which orders will use material prevents late purchases and outdated prices.

  • Balance tracked in grams
  • Restocks with updated average cost
  • Usage linked to orders

How it works

A simple path from start to result.

  1. 01

    Register each filament

Record material, colour, brand, available weight, price and minimum level.

  2. 02

    Link the usage

Enter how many grams each product uses to forecast consumption per order.

  3. 03

    Record restocks

Add the quantity bought and the total amount paid without overwriting the existing balance.

  4. 04

    Watch the minimum

Plan new purchases before the material you need for production runs out.

Stocktake

PLA and PETG filament inventory needs quantity and cost

Counting spools alone does not show how much material you really have. An open spool may have only a few grams left, while another is still full.

Record the balance in grams, the material, colour, brand and cost so you know what you can produce and how much filament adds to the price of a part.

Restocking

A new purchase can change the average cost

When the filament price changes, adding the quantity alone is not enough. The total cost of the restock has to feed into the average purchase cost recorded for that filament.

In Gestor 3D, a restock adds the purchased material to the available balance and updates the average using the quantities and amounts accumulated in the record, while keeping the event in the history.

Orders

Usage should follow what was sold

Products can use one or more filaments. Recording that composition makes it easier to forecast consumption and avoid accepting an order without enough material.

Gestor 3D deducts inventory through the order and keeps the state it needs so the same consumption is never deducted twice.

Organise orders and production
Planning

A minimum level reduces last-minute purchases

Set a minimum level based on the consumption and restock lead time of each material. Popular colours may need a bigger buffer.

Filament tracking for 3D printing helps you buy ahead of time and avoid holding more spools than you need.

Common questions

Quick answers before you start.

How do I track a spool of filament that is already open?

Record the available weight in grams and deduct the planned usage from products and orders. Weighing spools from time to time helps check the physical balance.

Should PLA and PETG share the same record?

Each filament should have its own record, as material, colour, price, quantity and printing behaviour can all differ.

How does restocking affect the filament cost?

Gestor 3D combines the quantities and amounts accumulated in the record with the new purchase to update the average purchase cost.
